# Serving Great Falls, VA: Sun, Well Water, and the Questions We Ask You First

Last updated: August 26, 2026

Great Falls is the one part of our service area where we routinely ask about the water at home. Most of the community draws from private wells, and that is genuinely useful context before planning a course of treatment.

- **Status:** unincorporated census-designated place in Fairfax County, covering 25.66 square miles.

- **Population:** 15,953 at the 2020 census, the smallest population over the largest area in our service region.

- **Water:** a significant share of homes are not on public water or sewer. Most homes north of Georgetown Pike draw from private wells.

- **Great Falls Park:** 800 acres administered by the National Park Service, with 15 miles of hiking trails and 5 miles of horseback riding and biking trails.

- **Drive to us:** south to Leesburg Pike, then straight down Hunter Mill Road. Usually twenty to twenty-five minutes.

## Getting Here From Great Falls

Great Falls is unusual in this part of Fairfax County for what it does not have. It is unincorporated, so there is no town government. It has no commercial center beyond the village at the crossroads, no Metro station, and no hospital or urgent care of its own. Fifteen thousand nine hundred and fifty-three people live across nearly twenty-six square miles, which is roughly a third the population of McLean spread over a slightly larger area.

The practical result is that Great Falls residents drive for everything, and are used to it. What is worth knowing is which drive this one is. Hunter Mill Road runs south from Leesburg Pike through Oakton, and we sit on it. It avoids the Beltway, avoids the Dulles Toll Road, and avoids the Tysons district entirely. Twenty to twenty-five minutes is typical outside the peaks, which for most of Great Falls is comparable to the drive to Reston and shorter than the drive to Tysons at the wrong time of day.

Because the drive is real, we would rather plan a full course of treatment with you at the start than have you make six trips discovering the schedule as you go. That is a general principle, but it applies with more force here than anywhere else we serve.

## The Well Water Question

This is the question we ask in Great Falls that we do not ask in Vienna or Tysons, and clients are usually surprised by it. The reason is simple. Public water in Fairfax County is a single treated supply with known characteristics. A private well is not. Groundwater mineral content differs from one property to the next, some households treat or soften their water and some do not, and the result is that two neighbors can be washing with meaningfully different water.

What that means in practice is modest and worth stating without exaggeration. Harder water leaves more mineral residue behind and makes cleansers rinse less cleanly, which is the sort of thing that shows up as skin that feels tight or filmy after washing rather than as a diagnosis. Softened water behaves differently again. If a client tells us they are on a well and have noticed either, it changes what home care we suggest alongside a course of treatment, and occasionally it changes the order we do things in. It is not a reason to avoid treatment and we would not sell anyone a product on the strength of it.

Separately from anything cosmetic, well owners are responsible for their own water quality. Fairfax County permits and oversees private wells and onsite sewage systems, and the [Virginia Department of Health maintains guidance on private well water](https://www.vdh.virginia.gov/environmental-health/onsite-sewage-water-services-updated/organizations/private-well-water-information/), including testing. That is a public health matter rather than a skin care one, but it is the more important of the two and worth a look if it has been a while.

## Sun, the Park, and When to Schedule

[Great Falls Park](https://www.nps.gov/grfa/) covers 800 acres along the Potomac and is administered by the National Park Service as part of the George Washington Memorial Parkway. It carries 15 miles of hiking trails and 5 miles of trails open to horseback riding and biking. Add the large private lots, the riding that goes with them, and the general shape of life here, and the average Great Falls client accumulates considerably more sun exposure across a year than someone whose outdoor time is a walk from a parking garage.

That matters because photosensitivity is not a formality on a consent form. Laser and acid peels both disturb the skin’s outer defenses, and pigment that is actively producing melanin responds unpredictably to energy aimed at it. A tan picked up on the river trails or in a paddock is enough to change how a laser reads the skin, and a careful practice will reschedule rather than treat over it. Being rescheduled is the good outcome in that situation.

The practical consequence is a calendar. A [laser hair removal](/laser-hair-removal/) course runs six to eight sessions spaced four to six weeks apart, because the laser only affects follicles in their active growth phase on the day of treatment. Started in late September or October, a course finishes in early spring, before the outdoor season resumes in earnest. Started in June, it spends its whole length fighting your weekends. [Electrolysis](/electrolysis-hair-removal/) is less constrained by season, because it treats the follicle directly rather than through pigment, and it is billed by time rather than by area.

## What Virginia Law Allows, and the Two Licenses to Check

So there are two licenses worth asking about, the person and the premises, and both are public record with the Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation. Very few clients ask about the second one. It is the more revealing of the two, because it is about how the business is set up rather than who happens to be working that day.

Above licensing sits scope of practice, set by [Section 54.1-2973.1 of the Code of Virginia](https://law.lis.virginia.gov/vacode/title54.1/chapter29/section54.1-2973.1/). It draws the boundary around what a licensed esthetician may do. Knowing roughly where that boundary sits is useful to you as a client, because it explains why a careful practice declines certain requests. A practice that declines nothing is not being generous with its time.

We are an esthetics practice, not a medical clinic, and we do not describe ourselves as one. That is a statement about what we are set up to do well, and it leads directly to the next section.

## When to See a Physician Instead

The distinction that matters is between a cosmetic concern and a medical one that happens to be visible, and they are not always easy to tell apart from the outside. A flat brown patch unchanged for ten years is a reasonable candidate for cosmetic treatment. A pigmented spot that has changed shape, color or size in recent months is not, and treating it cosmetically destroys the visual evidence a dermatologist would have used. The same goes for a sore that has not healed in several weeks, and for skin thickening or scaling in one defined area.

Hair loss is worth naming separately. Sudden shedding, loss in distinct patches, or loss with scalp irritation are medical presentations, with causes that run from thyroid disease to autoimmune conditions to medication side effects. Our [scalp and head treatments](/treatments/) are comfort and skin-health treatments for the scalp. We do not present them as hair regrowth treatments, because they are not, and anyone losing hair should have a diagnosis before an appointment.

Because there is no walk-in medical care in Great Falls itself, the nearest options are worth having in your phone before you need them. Inova-GoHealth operates urgent care in [McLean](https://www.inova.org/locations/inova-gohealth-urgent-care-mclean) on Old Chain Bridge Road and in the Tysons district. For emergencies, [Inova Fairfax Hospital](https://www.inova.org/locations/inova-fairfax-hospital) on Gallows Road is the closest full-service hospital. We name these as the places to go instead of us when that is the right call. We have no affiliation with any of them.

## Skin Tone, Laser, and the “All Skin Types” Claim

The Fitzpatrick scale describes how skin responds to sun exposure across six types, and practitioners use it to plan laser settings. Devices differ in wavelength, and wavelength governs how deeply the energy travels and how much is absorbed by pigment in the skin rather than pigment in the hair. Longer wavelengths pass more safely through melanin-rich skin. That is a fact about equipment, which is exactly why naming the device beats repeating a marketing line.

There is a second reason this question deserves care in Great Falls specifically. Skin that has picked up color over an outdoor summer is not the same target it was in March, even on someone who does not think of themselves as tanning easily. Settings appropriate in one season may not be appropriate in another for the same person, which is another argument for a course that runs through the cooler months.

Two honest caveats hold everywhere. Laser produces permanent hair reduction rather than permanent removal, so the correct expectation is substantially less hair, finer and lighter, with maintenance over time. And where hair is light, red, gray or very fine, laser has little pigment to target whatever your skin tone; electrolysis is the technique that works on those. We will tell you which applies to you, including when the answer is the less expensive one.

## Making One Drive Do More Than One Job

The pairings that generally work are the ones treating different tissue in different places. Laser hair removal on the body and a HydraFacial on the face are doing unrelated things to unrelated areas, and running them in one visit is simply efficient. Electrolysis on a small area alongside a facial treatment elsewhere works the same way.

The combinations to avoid are the ones that stack controlled injury on the same skin. Microneedling and a chemical peel on the same area in the same visit are both asking that tissue to mount a repair response, and doing them together increases irritation without improving the outcome. The same applies to radiofrequency microneedling paired with anything abrasive on the same area. A practice that agrees to stack those is not saving you a trip. It is creating one, because recovery takes longer and the next session gets pushed back.

The honest ways to reduce trips are different. Treat more area per visit where that is appropriate. Sequence the course so the longest intervals fall in the months you are busiest. Use single-session treatments for the stretches when a full course does not fit. Tell us at the consultation that the drive is a real factor and we will build the schedule around it rather than pretending it is not there.

## Frequently Asked Questions

Tap a question to chat with us.

Usually twenty to twenty-five minutes outside peak hours. Head south to Leesburg Pike and pick up Hunter Mill Road, which runs south through Oakton to us. It avoids the Beltway, the toll road and Tysons entirely, which is often why it is quicker than the map suggests at the wrong time of day.

Because most of Great Falls is, and private groundwater varies from property to property in a way public supply does not. Harder water leaves more mineral residue and rinses cleansers less cleanly, and a household softener changes that again. It is not a problem and it does not rule anything out. It occasionally changes the home care we suggest alongside a course of treatment, which is worth knowing at the start rather than the end.

Late September through early March, and that advice applies with extra force in Great Falls. Both treatments work best when the treated skin stays out of direct sun in the weeks afterward, and a community that spends its weekends on the river trails and in the paddock accumulates more sun than most. A course started in October finishes in early spring.

We are an esthetics practice rather than a medical clinic, and we do not present ourselves as one. Treatments are performed by a licensed advanced aesthetician. If your concern calls for a physician, the most useful thing we can do is tell you plainly, and we will.

Mostly through sun exposure and through friction and dust on treated skin. After laser or a peel, treated areas are more reactive for a period, and a helmet, gloves or tack rubbing on skin that is still settling is worth avoiding for a day or two. Tell us your riding schedule and we will schedule around it rather than asking you to stop.

Yes, and back and shoulder laser hair removal is one of the more common requests we get from men in this area. The mechanics are the same: six to eight sessions four to six weeks apart, priced by area, with the same seasonal argument for starting in the cooler months. Coarse dark hair on the back generally responds well.

Five questions, none of them about price. Who will actually perform the treatment. What qualification that person holds, and what license the business holds. Which device is being used, by manufacturer and model. What happens if the result is not what you expected. And what the practice will refuse to treat, because that answer reveals whether they have referral relationships or simply accept everyone who walks in.

## The Bottom Line for Great Falls

Great Falls is a twenty minute drive from us and a different set of circumstances from the rest of our service area. Well water instead of public supply, a great deal more time outdoors, and no walk-in medical care closer than McLean. None of that changes which treatments work. It changes when to start them, what to pair them with at home, and where to go when the problem is not one we should be treating at all.

Come in for a consultation and tell us about the water, the riding and the trails. It is more useful information than most practices ask for. [Get in touch](/contact-us/) and we will plan the whole course before you commit to the first session.
