# Morpheus8 in Oakton, VA: How RF Microneedling Tightens Skin Without Surgery

Last updated: August 25, 2026

Morpheus8 is radiofrequency microneedling, and the FDA cleared it in June 2024 as a Class II electrosurgical device, not as a skin tightening device.[1] That distinction matters more than any before-and-after photo you will see this week.

Morpheus8 drives fine needles into the skin while delivering radiofrequency energy into the deeper dermis. The controlled injury and the heat together prompt your body to build new collagen over the following weeks. It firms mild to moderate laxity gradually, across a short series of treatments. It is not a facelift, and it is not right for everyone who asks about it.

I have spent more than thirty years with my hands on real skin in Northern Virginia. In that time I have learned that the most useful thing I can tell you about a treatment is usually what it will not do.

So here is the honest version of Morpheus8 in [Oakton](/med-spa-oakton-va/): what the clearance actually says, how many sessions the published protocol used, what the research really studied, what drives the price, and who I would tell to wait.

- Morpheus8 is FDA cleared as an electrosurgical cutting and coagulation device under 21 CFR 878.4400. Skin tightening is a clinical use of that device, not the language of its clearance.

- The registered clinical protocol at UT Southwestern used four treatments, with results measured at three and six months.

- The most cited study on Morpheus8 for the lower face and neck did not test Morpheus8 alone.

- No professional association publishes a national average price for radiofrequency microneedling.

- Deep, heavy sagging is a surgical problem. I will tell you that rather than sell you a series.

## What Morpheus8 Actually Is, and What the FDA Cleared It For

Morpheus8 is a radiofrequency microneedling device made by InMode. The FDA cleared it under product code GEI, “Electrosurgical, Cutting and Coagulation and Accessories,” regulation [21 CFR 878.4400](https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-21/section-878.4400), as a Class II device. The most recent clearance, [K240017](https://www.accessdata.fda.gov/scripts/cdrh/cfdocs/cfpmn/pmn.cfm), was granted on June 13, 2024.[1] It is not cleared “for skin tightening.”

Read almost any med spa page about Morpheus8 and you will see the phrase “FDA cleared for skin tightening.” It is not. Morpheus8 clearances sit under electrosurgical cutting and coagulation, which is the regulatory category for a device that delivers energy into tissue.[1] Skin tightening is what practitioners use the device to achieve. That is a real and legitimate clinical use. It is simply not what the clearance document says, and the gap between those two things is where a lot of marketing lives.

Why does that matter to you as a patient? Because a practice willing to be loose with a regulatory claim is a practice that may also be loose about how many sessions you need. The clearance language is checkable in about two minutes. Ask.

## How Radiofrequency Microneedling Works on the Deeper Layer

Traditional microneedling relies on micro-injury near the skin’s surface to stimulate collagen. Morpheus8 adds radiofrequency energy that reaches the deeper dermis, where the structural collagen that holds skin taut actually lives. Heating that layer signals the body to remodel tissue and lay down fresh collagen, which produces gradual firming rather than an immediate lift.

![A gloved hand guiding a radiofrequency microneedling handpiece across skin in close detail.](https://aboutimagemedspa.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/rf-microneedling-handpiece-detail-hd.webp)

The depth is the entire point. Surface treatments improve texture and tone, and they do it well. They cannot reach the layer responsible for a jawline losing its edge.

Because the energy is delivered below the surface, the top layer of skin stays relatively protected. That is why recovery from Morpheus8 is measured in days rather than the weeks a resurfacing procedure demands. The treatment is used on the face, along the jawline and neck, and on the body. You can see the full [Morpheus8 skin tightening](https://aboutimagemedspa.com/morpheus8-skin-tightening/) service details, including the areas we treat.

Collagen does not form on a schedule that suits marketing. It takes weeks. Any provider promising you a visible lift the same afternoon is describing swelling.

## How Many Sessions You Actually Need

The [registered clinical protocol run at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center](https://clinicaltrials.gov/study/NCT05085730) used four bipolar radiofrequency microneedling treatments, with skin quality outcomes measured at baseline, three months, and six months.[3] That study enrolled 13 participants, which is small, and it is the clearest published protocol available for standalone Morpheus8.

You will find a different number on nearly every website you read. Three is the most common, because three is a tidy package to sell. The registered UT Southwestern protocol used four treatments and read results at three and six months.[3] I want to be straightforward about the limits of that evidence: with 13 participants, it tells you what a careful protocol looked like, not what will happen to your face.

What the number of sessions actually depends on is how much laxity you are starting with, your age, and how your skin heals. That is not a dodge. Those three factors are why I will not quote you a session count before I have looked at your skin, and why a practice that quotes one over the phone is quoting a package rather than a plan.

The timeline is the part people underestimate. You may notice early smoothing within a few weeks. The firming keeps developing for months after your last appointment, because you are waiting on collagen your body is still building.

## What the Research Actually Studied, and Why That Matters

The most cited study on radiofrequency for lower face and neck laxity followed 247 patients across three centers and reported an average 1.4 point improvement on the Baker Face/Neck Classification, with 93% patient satisfaction.[2] It did not study Morpheus8 on its own. It studied Morpheus8 combined with FaceTite, a separate device, in plastic surgery practices.

This is the part almost nobody explains. [Dayan and colleagues, publishing in 2020](https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC7489644/), combined two radiofrequency modalities: bipolar RF delivered by FaceTite, followed by fractional bipolar RF from the Morpheus8 handpiece. The procedures were performed under local anesthesia in 97.2% of the 247 cases, by board-certified plastic surgeons, averaging 58 minutes.[2]

FaceTite is delivered by a cannula placed beneath the skin. That is a minimally invasive procedure, and it sits entirely outside what an aesthetician does. So when a med spa cites this study’s results for a standalone Morpheus8 session, the comparison does not hold. The reported complications, including a 1.2% rate of marginal mandibular neuropraxia, belong to that combined procedure and not to the treatment you would receive in my chair.[2]

The study’s own authors, plastic surgeons with every commercial reason to claim otherwise, put the limit plainly:

> “This combination RF treatment does not aim to replace a facelift/necklift in appropriate candidates, but broaden the armamentarium to fill a treatment gap.”[2]

That sentence is the most honest thing written about radiofrequency skin tightening, and it comes from surgeons.

## What Morpheus8 Costs Near Oakton, and Why Nobody Publishes a Number

No professional association publishes a national average price for radiofrequency microneedling. The [American Society of Plastic Surgeons](https://www.plasticsurgery.org/cosmetic-procedures/skin-rejuvenation-and-resurfacing/cost) publishes averages for adjacent procedures, $1,829 for skin resurfacing and $697 for laser skin treatments, and neither category is RF microneedling.[4] What does exist is a clear list of the factors that set your price.

I looked for a defensible national figure to give you and there is not one. ASPS names skin resurfacing at $1,829 and laser skin treatments at $697.[4] Neither figure covers radiofrequency microneedling, so quoting either one at you for Morpheus8 would be dishonest by a category.

ASPS is careful about what its own figures cover, and the caveat is worth reading in full:

> “This average cost is only part of the total price – it does not include other related expenses.”[4]

In practice, four things move a Morpheus8 quote: how many areas you are treating, whether the neck is included, how many sessions your laxity realistically needs, and who is holding the handpiece. Because Morpheus8 works as a short series, budget for the course rather than a single visit. A per-session price that looks low across six sessions is not a bargain.

## Who Is a Good Candidate, and Who Should Wait

Morpheus8 suits mild to moderate laxity: early jowls, a jawline losing definition, crepey neck skin, enlarged pores, and some acne scarring. It suits people who want gradual firming and can commit to a series over about three months. It does not suit significant, heavy sagging, and it is not appropriate during pregnancy or shortly after isotretinoin.

Choosing the right candidate is where experience earns its keep, and it is the section most treatment pages skip entirely. When skin and the tissue beneath it have descended significantly, no amount of collagen stimulation lifts them the way surgery does. Telling someone that costs me a sale. Selling them a series that cannot meet their goal costs them their trust, and they were right to expect better.

Timing matters as much as anatomy. Recent isotretinoin use, an active skin infection, pregnancy, and certain implanted electronic devices are all reasons to postpone or reconsider. Those come up in consultation, which is exactly what a consultation is for.

If you are in your thirties with good skin quality and almost no laxity, my honest advice is usually to wait, protect what you have, and revisit it in a few years. If you want visible improvement without the downtime, [PRX treatment](https://aboutimagemedspa.com/prx-treatment/) uses no needles at all.

| Option | What it targets | Downtime | Best for |

| Standard microneedling | Surface texture, mild scarring | 1 to 2 days | Skin quality with minimal laxity |

| Morpheus8 (RF microneedling) | Mild to moderate laxity plus texture | A few days | Early jowls, jawline, neck, pores, scars |

| CryoSculpting (for comparison) | Stubborn fat, not loose skin | Minimal | Fat reduction where skin quality is good |

| Surgical facelift | Significant, heavy sagging | Weeks | Deep laxity that firming cannot reach |

## What Treatment and Recovery Feel Like in Practice

A numbing cream goes on first, so most people describe the treatment as firm pressure and heat rather than sharp pain. Afterward, expect redness resembling a moderate sunburn, some swelling, and a slightly rough texture for a few days. Most people return to normal activities quickly and cover residual redness with mineral makeup after a day or two.

On the day, your skin is flushed and warm. By the next morning, the redness has usually calmed to something a tinted SPF handles, though deeper settings mean a longer flush. You may feel tight and look a little swollen for a day or two, particularly around the jaw and neck. Small grid-like marks from the needle tips can appear and fade within a few days.

Skip heavy workouts, saunas, and active skincare like retinoids for a short window, and protect the skin from sun carefully while it heals. None of that is complicated. Knowing it in advance is the difference between a calm recovery and a worried phone call on day two.

The most common surprise is how manageable day two looks compared with the dramatic photos people find online.

## The Bottom Line on Morpheus8 in Oakton

Morpheus8 does something real. It firms mild to moderate laxity and improves texture without surgery, over a planned series, with a few days of downtime. The caveats matter as much as the benefits: the clearance is not what most pages claim, the strongest published evidence studied a combined procedure that no med spa performs, and nobody can honestly quote you a national price.
