What the FDA has approved for hair growth, and how to tell shedding from thinning. --- # Head Spa and Scalp Treatments in Fairfax for Thinning Hair and Scalp Health Last updated: August 25, 2026 The FDA has approved a topical drug whose stated purpose is “hair regrowth treatment,” and cleared laser devices to promote hair growth in a narrowly defined group.[2][3] A head spa is neither of those things, and understanding why is what makes it worth booking for the right reason. A head spa is a scalp treatment. It cleanses, exfoliates and relieves buildup and tension, and Virginia’s definition of esthetics explicitly covers the scalp.[1] It is not an approved or cleared treatment for hair loss, and it does not carry that indication. If your real concern is thinning rather than scalp condition, the honest first step is finding out which of the two you have. This is the post I have wanted to write for a long time, because scalp care has become fashionable and the marketing around it has run well ahead of what the treatment actually is. A head spa is genuinely worth having. It is simply worth having for what it does rather than for what a brochure implies. - Virginia’s definition of esthetics covers procedures on **the skin of the human body or scalp**, which is where a head spa sits.[1] - Over-the-counter topical minoxidil is labeled for use **on the top of the scalp, vertex only**.[2] - The FDA device category for hair-growth laser combs is defined as promoting growth **in males with androgenic alopecia** at Norwood Hamilton IIa to V.[3] That is how specific a real indication looks. - A normal scalp is roughly **85% growing hair and 15% resting hair**; collecting **100 or more hairs in 24 hours** suggests shedding rather than thinning.[5] - Shedding is frequently driven by **iron, zinc or vitamin D levels, medication or hormonal change**, none of which a scalp treatment can correct.[5] ## What a Scalp Treatment Is, in Virginia’s Own Words Virginia’s esthetics definition explicitly includes the scalp, listing cleansing, toning, effleurage, stimulating and exfoliating by means of cosmetic preparations or a nonlaser device. A head spa is squarely inside that scope, which is exactly why it is not a medical procedure. Start with the boring part, because it settles a surprising amount. The [Code of Virginia](https://law.lis.virginia.gov/vacode/title54.1/chapter7/section54.1-700/) defines esthetics as administering cosmetic treatments to enhance or improve the appearance of the skin, including “cleansing, toning, performing effleurage or other related movements, stimulating, exfoliating, or performing any other similar procedure on the skin of the human body or scalp by means of cosmetic preparations, treatments, or any nonlaser device.”[1] Two things follow. The scalp is named, so scalp work is properly esthetics rather than a gray area. And the tools are named too: cosmetic preparations and nonlaser devices. That is the honest boundary of the treatment. ## What the FDA Has Actually Approved and Cleared for Hair Growth Real hair-growth indications are startlingly narrow. Over-the-counter minoxidil is labeled for the vertex only. The FDA category covering hair-growth laser combs is defined for males with androgenic alopecia in a specified Norwood Hamilton range. Precision is the tell. This is the comparison that makes everything else make sense, and almost nobody puts it in front of you. **Topical minoxidil.** The over-the-counter drug label states its purpose as “Hair regrowth treatment” and gives the indication as: “Use to regrow hair on the top of the scalp (vertex only, see pictures on side of carton).”[2] Not the hairline. Not diffuse thinning everywhere. The vertex. **Laser combs and caps.** These are regulated devices. The FDA classification for the category, product code OAP under [21 CFR 890.5500](https://www.accessdata.fda.gov/scripts/cdrh/cfdocs/cfcfr/CFRSearch.cfm?fr=890.5500), defines the device this way:[3] > “Promote hair growth in males with androgenic alopecia and norwood hamilton classification of IIa to V”[3] Read that again. Males. A named condition. A specified severity range on a named scale. Individual devices are then cleared into that category one at a time, such as a laser therapy hair growth comb cleared in May 2023.[4] **That specificity is the point.** When a treatment genuinely does something to hair growth, the claim attached to it is narrow, written down and checkable. When a treatment is described as “supporting healthy growth” or “creating the ideal environment,” no such indication exists, because none was sought and none was granted. Those are real benefits with real comfort value. They are benefits of a clean, comfortable scalp rather than a treatment for hair loss. Having drawn the line honestly, let me defend the treatment properly, because it deserves defending. The scalp is skin. It is skin that most people wash quickly, cover with product, and otherwise ignore entirely. Buildup of sebum, dry shampoo, styling product and dead skin is genuinely common, and a thorough professional cleanse and exfoliation does something a two-minute shower does not. Add sustained massage and you have a treatment that is deeply comfortable and that many people find helps with tension they had stopped noticing. That is a legitimate reason to book something. Comfort is allowed to be the point. What it will not do is change the biology of a follicle that is miniaturizing or restart hairs that stopped growing for an internal reason. Anyone telling you otherwise is selling past the evidence. ## Shedding and Thinning Are Different Problems Shedding is hair leaving faster than usual, often temporarily. Thinning is hair growing back finer or not at all. A normal scalp runs about 85% growing to 15% resting hair, and collecting 100 or more hairs in 24 hours points toward shedding. People walk in describing “hair loss” and mean two completely different things. Acute telogen effluvium is described as a self-limited and spontaneously reversible condition, though the reference also notes that regrowth may take up to six months to restart and longer still to be visible.[5] ## The Causes No Scalp Treatment Can Reach Where shedding follows a hormonal or dietary imbalance such as low iron, zinc or vitamin D, hair growth returns once those are corrected. Where a medication is responsible, growth restarts when it is withdrawn. No topical treatment addresses any of that. This is the part I would most want a friend to know, and it is the reason I will sometimes tell someone not to book with us yet. The clinical reference is direct about it: if a hormonal or dietary imbalance such as low iron, zinc or vitamin D levels, or a metabolic illness, is present, hair growth returns after those factors are corrected. If a medication is the cause, growth restarts after the medication is withdrawn.[5] **A blood test can therefore be worth more than a year of treatments.** If you are shedding and you have not had iron, ferritin, zinc, vitamin D and thyroid checked, that is the highest-value thing you can do this month, and it is not something a spa can do for you. ## When to See a Dermatologist Instead Go medical first for sudden or patchy loss, any scarring or smooth bald areas, pain, sores, or loss alongside other symptoms. Scalp treatments are for scalp condition and comfort, and they will still be there once a cause has been ruled out. Book a clinician rather than a treatment if you notice sudden or rapid loss, distinct patches, smooth or shiny skin where hair used to be, scarring, sores, pain, or hair loss alongside fatigue or other changes. None of that is a reason to avoid a head spa afterwards. It is a reason to sequence it correctly.
